Challenge Family returns to Cancún in 2020

  • Cancún is the only destination in México that has the CHALLENGEFAMILY license, positioning itself
    as a favorite location for the triathon.
  • Cancún has an important registry of athletes from 10 countries and is expected to reach its goal
    of 1,500 athletes, plus 3,000 companions.

Cancún, Oct. 29, 2019 – Cancún, Quintana Roo’s top destination, will once again host the CHALLENGEFAMILY triathlon series, an event of international importance that features athletes from all over the world.

On April 26, 2020, nearly 1,500 competitors from Germany, Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Brazil, among others, will meet at Playa Langosta to swim 1.9 kilometers in the incomparable turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean sea. A spectacular 90-kilometer cycling route will cover Bonampak and Kukulcán Avenues, in a circuit that displays the beauty of Cancún to competitors and spectators. Finally, competitiors will race a three-lap, 21-kilometer course on Bonampak Avenue to reach the finish line at Tec Milenio University. For its second edition, CHALLENGECANCÚN will open additional events for triathlete companions. The activities will include a beach race; Beach Fun Run for kids; and Challange Open Water at varying distances.

The awards ceremony at Palapas Park will celebrate the elite athletes with a $15,000 prize pool, and the six first-place winners of each category will receive the classification to the THECHAMPIONSHIP in Samorin, Slovakia, in addition to their respective trophies. This prestigious international event is endorsed by the Mexican Triathlon Federation resulting from the collaboration of the Quintana Roo Tourism Board, the Cancún and Puerto Morelos Hotel Association, and the City Council of Benito Juárez. Andrés Martínez, Quintana Roo Tourism Board marketing director, told media: “With more than 400 daily flights from different parts of the world, Cancún has become an important location in sports tourism by receiving events of international stature that drive the promotion and the economic benefits of the destination.”
