{"id":18642,"date":"2022-01-28T02:26:20","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T02:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.challenge-family.com\/challenge-family\/uncategorized\/goal-setting-what-makes-it-work\/"},"modified":"2024-05-29T15:37:52","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T15:37:52","slug":"goal-setting-what-makes-it-work","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.challenge-family.com\/challenge-family\/news\/goal-setting-what-makes-it-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Goal Setting &#8211; What Makes It Work?.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well here we go, it\u2019s that time of year again where you\u2019re likely thinking about what 2022 holds for you, which races you\u2019d like to target and if we\u2019re really honest, how many of them you\u2019ll actually be able to make it to!\u00a0 When the whole world is still upside down, goal setting can create focus, certainty, consistency and motivation but HOW you set those goals is even more critical than the goal itself.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to share with you the three things that makes goal setting work, tried and tested over and over with our own coached athletes.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to remember is that goals are entirely personal to you, working towards a goal that is important and has meaning to you is the first essential step.\u00a0 Set yourself a goal that your training buddy wants to do and you\u2019ll lose your way.\u00a0 Set a goal that your coach thinks you should do and you\u2019ll lose motivation.\u00a0 So take some time to think about what makes you feel excited.\u00a0 What feels like it\u2019s just slightly out of reach but with effort and a plan in place, could just be doable.<\/p>\n<p>Setting unrealistic goals creates disbelief which can lead to anxiety.\u00a0 You\u2019ll either miss your goal by a country mile and feel as though you\u2019ve failed, or you\u2019ll panic and overtrain trying to hit your numbers when the truth is, you\u2019re just not ready for it yet.<\/p>\n<p>Take\u00a0Peter, an\u00a0athlete\u00a0with 2 years triathlon experience who had done Challenge Peguera-Mallorca to finish his season and was now\u00a0training for DATEV Challenge Roth.\u00a0 When we started working with\u00a0Peter, he was following a training plan designed for an elite athlete.\u00a0 The plan required him to train more or less full time and\u00a0had hours of training sessions with both high intensity and duration.\u00a0\u00a0For a working dad of two, life just didn\u2019t allow for that and so unsurprisingly\u00a0Peter\u00a0came to us tired, frustrated and on paper, \u2018failing\u2019.\u00a0 The goal itself was both aspirational and achievable but training like\u00a0a pro, was totally unrealistic which made the goal itself feel out of reach.\u00a0 So we helped him to redesign his training.<\/p>\n<p>For goals like Peters (and in fact any goal at all), you need to break it down into both short term (proximal) and long term (distal) goals.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you\u2019re working towards a DATEV Challenge Roth race in\u00a02022, this is your big goal, it\u2019s your\u00a0\u2018A\u2019\u00a0race. But in order to build towards your A race we need to focus on each of the individual elements of\u00a0triathlon. Breaking down the whole race into the specific disciplines, wrapping around the right numbers to train towards\u00a0(and when we say the right numbers we mean numbers that are tough but achievable)\u00a0and then using\u00a0regular testing along with\u00a0less important \u2018B\u2019\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018C\u2019\u00a0races as markers to measure your progress makes your big audacious goal, suddenly much more manageable.<\/p>\n<p>When we work with athletes at Challenge Tri Camp we use your training numbers to design each session. These numbers guide both us as the coaches and you as the athlete and most importantly allow you to see the steady build of strength and endurance and power you\u2019re creating as you work towards your goal.\u00a0 So whether you\u2019re working with a coach or guiding yourself, remember, know your numbers and work towards steady incremental growth \u2013 gains are not made from unrealistic giant leaps.<\/p>\n<p>Next, think about the local or regional races that you can use as building blocks to work into your schedule.\u00a0 Working backwards from\u00a0your \u2018A\u2019\u00a0race, identify smaller races that you can use that will work as shorter term goals allowing you to track progress and build confidence, these are crucial building blocks in getting you closer to your\u00a0\u2018A\u2019\u00a0race.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s summarise:<\/p>\n<p>1 \u2013 Make your main goal for the year one that\u2019s both ambitious and, with effort, achievable.<\/p>\n<p>2 \u2013 Know and work with your numbers, pay attention to what they\u2019re telling you and focus on small incremental steps, giant leaps will signal that something is wrong not right!<\/p>\n<p>3 \u2013 Finally, find shorter term races\u00a0or do your own \u2018race simulations\u2019\u00a0that form the building blocks for your training plan.
