In a high-class race and under extremely high temperatures, Maurice\u00a0Clavel\u00a0and Radka\u00a0Kahlefeldt\u00a0won the tenth edition of the\u00a0CHALLENGE<\/em><\/i><\/b>KAISERWINKL-WALCHSEE<\/em><\/i>.\u00a0Clavel initially took the lead from\u00a0Frederic Funk on the second\u00a0bike\u00a0lap and increased the gap\u00a0during the final half marathon\u00a0to take the win in an\u00a0impressive time of\u00a03:50:38 hours. In the women\u2018s race, Radka\u00a0Kahlefeldt\u00a0dominated the event right from the swim\u00a0\u00a0and kept her lead on the bike course ahead of a very strong Emma\u00a0Pallant, who later came second. Kahlefeldt made pace on the chasing athletes on the\u00a0final run to cross the finish line\u00a0first\u00a0in 4:19:45 hours.<\/p>\n

The 10th anniversary of the CHALLENGE<\/strong>KAISERWINKL-WALCHSEE<\/em> began at 10:30 am with a spectacular\u00a0beach\u00a0start\u00a0for both professionals and age groupers alike.\u00a0The professional men were first to enter the turquoise blue water of lake Walchsee and early on, it was\u00a0a group of five\u00a0men comprised of\u00a0Nils\u00a0Frommhold, Giulio Molinari, Frederic Funk, Maurice\u00a0Clavel\u00a0and David Bishop,\u00a0that outpaced the\u00a0rest of the field. With a swim time of 24:19 minutes, Nils\u00a0Frommhold\u00a0was first to reach the transition zone. But from the beginning of the\u00a0bike\u00a0course, Frederic Funk was able to take the lead and together with\u00a0Clavel\u00a0and\u00a0Frommhold, they were\u00a0able to extend the gap on the rest of the field up to the 45km mark.<\/p>\n

On the second half of the bike course, it was the eventual winner\u00a0Clavel,\u00a0who took the lead and was\u00a0able to open up a gap of\u00a03 minutes over\u00a0Funk and the chasing pack to enter\u00a0the second transition zone. “Thanks to my altitude training camp in St. Moritz, I was able to\u00a0speed up\u00a0on the second half of the\u00a0bike course” said\u00a0Clavel, who\u00a0never let up in the final\u00a0run and held a\u00a0consistently high pace\u00a0to expand the\u00a0gap on his pursuers. With a very strong\u00a0winning\u00a0time of 3:50:38 hours, he was first to cross the finish line. “Considering\u00a0the\u00a0very strong starting field,\u00a0this\u00a0win means so much more and it paid off to do my own race from\u00a0start to finish\u201d, said Clavel,\u00a0having defied the scorching temperatures.\u00a0After 3:53:07, Frederic Funk crossed the finish line in second place and was just as happy: “I started the first\u00a0bike lap\u00a0a bit too fast, but since it’s my home\u00a0course, I was simply\u00a0pushed\u00a0to the\u00a0front by the spectators.\u00a0Going into the half marathon\u00a0I went completely over my limit in the heat and didn\u2019t think that I was even going to finish this, so I’m super happy with second place!”<\/p>\n

“I wanted to be in the leading pack today, and that’s just what I did!”<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the professional women’s event, Radka\u00a0Kahlefeldt didn\u2019t hesitate in\u00a0putting her mark on the\u00a0race, when\u00a0she pushed the pace in\u00a0Walchsee\u00a0from very\u00a0early on. Followed by Emma\u00a0Pallant\u00a0and Julia\u00a0Gajer,\u00a0she reached the swim exit after 26:58 minutes, changed quickly to\u00a0jump on her\u00a0time trial bike and was able to slightly increase her lead\u00a0on the bike course,\u00a0despite\u00a0the fact that it was her first time at\u00a0CHALLENGE<\/em><\/i><\/b>KAISERWINKL-WALCHSEE<\/em><\/i>\u00a0<\/em><\/i>and she was not\u00a0familiar with the very technical bike course.\u00a0“From the 70km mark onwards, I tried to\u00a0outpace\u00a0Emma\u00a0Pallant\u00a0and after the second bike lap, I\u00a0had the courage\u00a0to ride the very technical downhill passages more aggressively\u00a0to shake off Emma,\u00a0because I definitely\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0want\u00a0to risk a head-to-head run in the half marathon\u201d,\u00a0said an overjoyed\u00a0Kahlefeldt\u00a0as first woman to cross\u00a0the finish line, in a time of 4:19:45 hours. Emma\u00a0Pallant\u00a0(4:21:33 hours) and\u00a0SvenjaThoes\u00a0(4:26:45 hours) followed in second and third place.<\/p>\n

Race Director Andreas Klingler, as well as the chairman of the Kaiserwinkl tourist association, Gerd Erharter were just as happy as the winners of the anniversary edition. “We\u00a0adapted\u00a0to the extreme weather conditions with additional water, food and cooling stations and are very pleased, that we were able to get the athletes to the finish line\u00a0healthy. We\u00a0have seen two very good and deserving winners today,” said Klingler, who was very satisfied about the smooth\u00a0organisation\u00a0of\u00a0the race. Dieter\u00a0Wittlinger\u00a0also emphasized the successful organization: “We are more than happy with the whole event and are pleased about the relocation of the event date this year, which allowed us to welcome more participants to the\u00a0Kaiserwinkl\u00a0region. The race pictures promote our region in the best way possible and the whole world can look on! We\u00a0look forward to the next edition in 2020 as\u00a0the\u00a0European Championship”.<\/p>\n

Regarding the eleventh edition of\u00a0CHALLENGE<\/em><\/i><\/b>KAISERWINKL-WALCHSEE<\/em><\/i>, the municipality of\u00a0Walchsee\u00a0and the entire\u00a0Kaiserwinkl\u00a0region expects a top class triathlon race, when the ETU European Championship Middle Distance Festival will be\u00a0held\u00a0in\u00a0Walchsee\u00a0and\u00a0the best athletes in Europe will be there to compete against each other.<\/p>\n
