CHALLENGE<\/em><\/strong>DAYTONA<\/em>, the inaugural triathlon race and endurance sports festival set to debut at Daytona International Speedway, welcomes an all-star celebrity relay. The team, consisting of swimming great Charlie Lydecker<\/a>, cyclist and NASCAR President Steve Phelps<\/a>, and runner and beloved Paralympic triathlete Rudy Garcia-Tolson<\/a>, will compete in the CHALLENGE<\/em><\/strong>DAYTONA<\/em> Middle Distance triathlon on behalf of The NASCAR Foundation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As the anchor for the celebrity relay team, Garcia-Tolson brings significant athletic experience to bear on the half marathon around Daytona International Speedway. Perhaps best known for his swimming accolades, Garcia-Tolson is a four-time Paralympic athlete and multi-time Paralympic medalist in swimming.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Garcia-Tolson\u2019s mission is to lead by example. His motto of \u201cNo Legs, No Limits\u201d concisely conveys the physical challenge that he has overcome as a double above-the-knee amputee, and his passionate desire to inspire others through his numerous achievements.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe real disability in life is a negative attitude,\u201d says Garcia-Tolson. \u201cWith passion and a positive outlook\u2014plus a lot of hard work\u2014the seemingly impossible becomes possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thus far, his medal tally includes two gold, two silver, and one bronze (2004\u20132016). In 2012, Garcia-Tolson also competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter track and field events. Additionally, he holds numerous triathlon finishes to his credit and was one of six triathletes highlighted in the feature-length film We Are Triathletes<\/a>, showcasing his efforts at the CHALLENGE<\/em><\/strong>FAMILY<\/em> flagship event, CHALLENGE<\/em><\/strong>ROTH<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In June 2018, Garcia-Tolson competed in THE<\/em><\/strong>CHAMPIONSHIP<\/em>, the CHALLENGE<\/em><\/strong>FAMILY<\/em>\u2019s Middle Distance championship event in Samorin, Slovakia.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I raced THE<\/em><\/strong>CHAMPIONSHIP<\/em>, I was blown away by the passion of the entire CHALLENGE<\/em><\/strong>FAMILY<\/em>\u2014the staff, the spectators, the volunteers, and the fellow athletes from around the world,\u201d he continues. \u201cIt was an experience I\u2019ll never forget, and I can\u2019t wait to be a part of this new race in the U.S. It\u2019s history in the making at Daytona International Speedway. I\u2019m honored to join Charlie and Steve, not only to tackle the Middle Distance tri, but to raise funds for The NASCAR Foundation to help children in need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joining Garcia-Tolson in the relay are Lydecker and Phelps.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A former collegiate swimmer at American University, Lydecker serves as CEO of Foundation Risk Partners, a company he founded two years ago and has developed into a major national insurance firm. Now 55, Lydecker is a four-time World Champion swimmer and still holds the Alcatraz Swim Classic men\u2019s open category record from his victory in 2007.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As newly-appointed NASCAR president, Phelps\u2019 professional focus is on fast cars. But the 54-year-old is also an avid and experienced road cyclist, routinely training with the likes of former Tour de France competitor George Hincapie. Phelps never shies away from a turn at the front of the paceline. He\u2019s known for pushing the pace with his training partners, leading the pack at 26-plus miles per hour.<\/p>\n

Clad in CHALLENGE<\/em><\/strong>DAYTONA-<\/em>branded kits provided by Veneto Sportswear, the talented trio will race on behalf of The NASCAR Foundation. This leading charitable organization works to improve the lives of children who need it most in NASCAR communities through the Speediatrics Children’s Fund and the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award. The NASCAR Foundation makes children’s health and medical needs their top priority, driven by the belief that every child should have a chance at a healthy life and deserves to get across the finish line.<\/p>\n

The top six male and female finishers in each Middle Distance Triathlon age group will qualify for\u00a0THE<\/strong><\/em>CHAMPIONSHIP, <\/em>to be held on June 2nd\u00a0<\/sup>2019 at the x-bionic sphere in Samorin, Slovakia.
