Griffin and Robinson win big at Challenge Penticton

Leon Griffin and Claire Robinson take the titles in CHALLENGEPENTICTON Half Triathlon in the scorching Penticton heat.

Penticton, B.C., March 1, 2017 – Leon Griffin and Claire Robinson won the 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run titles in Penticton on Sunday in hot and dry conditions. The race this year had three versions: a half distance triathlon, a standard distance triathlon and an aquabike.

Griffin topped Male Pros Nathan Killam and Shawn Wilyman, who rounded out the men’s podium.

“He (Killam) had a pretty significant lead coming off the bike, and I just kept chipping away at him,” said Griffin, who made the trip up from Boulder, Colorado for the race. “Once I saw him in my sights I made my move.” Griffin bested Killam with a total time of 3:59:48, one minute ahead of Killam and six minutes ahead of where Wilyman would eventually finish.

Claire Robinson of Vancouver, BC the women’s winner and would be surprised and delighted to learn she crossed the tape first. “I knew I was close to the top, but I didn’t know exactly where I stood,” she said. “It was one of those days where heat was a factor.” Robinson finished the day off at 5:02:40, nearly three minutes ahead of the next fastest female, Lindsay Glassford. Robinson returns next month to content for the title at ITU Multisport World Championships in Penticton in August.
